Since 1993, the work of Nie Hong has been included in many important national Chinese art exhibitions, including the 8th National Fine Art Exhibition, the 2nd China Oil Painting Still Life Exhibition and the 10th Military Fine Art Exhibition. China's Market for Oil Painting Magazine nominated a collection of 15 paintings by Nie as one of the country's most valuable in 2006 and in its March 2007 issue listed the artist's Melody of the Yellow River as a national masterpiece. Nie currently works as a senior visual artist for Beijing Military Film Studio.

The consummate power of China's iconic Yellow River, known as "the Mother River of China," is the subject of Yellow River, one in a series of important oil paintings that have garnered artist Nie Hong both critical acclaim and national awards in his native mainland China.

For thousands of years, the Yellow River, China's second longest one, has been considered the cradle of Chinese civilization and the spiritual home of the Chinese people. Its basin was the site of ancient northern civilizations and the most prosperous region in early Chinese history, its barren landscape synonymous with the very essence of Chineseness. With its churning ochre-colored waters, the river traditionally has symbolized China itself in all its greatness, magnificence and resilience.

Yet, it has also been known as "China's Sorrow" because of its once virtually untamed wildness and the catastrophic damage it has done to both man and land because of flooding. In Yellow River, Nie depicts the river, whose floods account for some of the deadliest natural disasters in human history, in all its omnipotence -- as simultaneous giver of life and creator of death. Even now, the Yellow River impacts China adversely because of industrial pollution and desert encroachment with global warming, which has taken a post-modern toll on Chinese society.

Nie's large-scale oil painting, Dawn of Music, is less daunting and more charming than the artist's feral depiction of the Yellow River. A sweet country girl, lips to a slender bamboo flute, gazes at the viewer; at her feet, a gigantic sunflower spills from a woven basket, probably picked from the field of flowers that crown the small ravine behind her. The yellow walls of this small gorge, most probably created by the mighty flow of the Yellow River, glows golden, as do simple village buildings in the distance, whose walls are made of the ochre loess left by the river's unruly waters. The entire scene is bathed in the distinctive color of dawn, which makes the painting almost iridescent. In Dawn of Music, Nie elegantly captures the beneficent nature of the Yellow River, its life-giving properties outshining its brutal side like the warm light of day's beginning.

Born in 1959 in Qingdao, more familiarly known to westerners as Tsingtao, in Shandong Province, artist Nie Hong was so adept at drawing and painting early on that in 1978 he was personally invited to join the mainland Chinese government's Air Force Military Performance Group as a visual artist. Because of his consummate skill, Nie was thereafter sent to art school by the People's Liberation Army, where he majored in oil painting.

Mr. Nie Hong was born in 1959 in Qing Dao city, and in 1978, he was invited to join Chinese Government’s Air force Military Performance Group as an exceptional artist.  Moreover, Mr. Nie has graduated from art school of People’s Army majoring oil painting; currently working as a senior visual artist for Beijing Military Film Studio. Mr. Nie is also a profound member of China Fine Art Community, and has a reputation as national acclaimed artist.
