The tranquility of contemporary Chinese and Tibetan pastoral life is the essence of the masterful impressionistic oil paintings of artist Wu Jing Han, who was born in Beijing, mainland China in 1964. After attending Beijing's High School of Fine Arts between 1980 and 1984, Wu was exposed to many different styles of Western painting technique at the esteemed Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he earned a degree in oil painting. Since that time, his work has been exhibited in a number of important international art venues, including China, Singapore and France.

"Past to a new Beginning" 36" x 72 " PR8

In one of Wu's most memorable paintings, Past to a New Beginning, the artist emblematically encapsulates the dichotomy of Tibetan culture in the contemporary world. In this long, vertical piece, an old Tibetan woman, her back to the viewer, prays facing towards one of Tibet's many sacred mountains, to which she most likely has made a pilgrimage. The woman has removed her shoes to pray, a sign of reverence for the holiness of the place and occasion. For Tibetan Buddhists, pilgrimage refers to the journey from ignorance to enlightenment, from self-centeredness and materialistic preoccupations to a deep sense of the relativity and interconnectedness of all life. Next to her, a young girl in classic Tibetan regalia stands with her back to the mountain, though close to the old woman who is engaged in religious ritual. Emblematically, this image represents the striking changes Tibet has undergone since being placed under Chinese governmental rule . In spite of the rapid westernization of Tibet and China,These people remain intimately close to their ancient religious heritage.
